Home Barista vs Café Calculator
A machine is a pile of sunk cost; café drinks are a daily leak. Break-even is machine cost divided by the gap between café price and your true home cost per drink (beans, milk, electricity, not the Instagram aesthetic). After that, yearly savings assume you keep the same habit.

Recommended gear
Espresso machine
The big line item. A $300 machine breaks even faster than a $3 000 one at the same café habit.
Typical range: $400–$2,500
Comandante C40 MK4
Do not forget the grinder in machineCost. A $90 blade mill is not a home barista setup.
Typical range: $250–$320
Acaia coffee scale
Home cost per drink assumes you are not wasting 10 g extra per shot. Weigh.
Typical range: $150–$300
Calculation method
Savings per drink is café price minus home cost. Days to break-even is the kit price divided by that gap times drinks per day. $1 200 at $3.90 saved, two drinks a day, is about 154 days. Yearly savings is the gap times drinks times 365, ignoring that you already spent the machine money. If home costs more than the café, there is no break-even.
Exact formula
gap = cafePricePerDrink − homeCostPerDrink. daysToBreakeven = machineCost / (gap × drinksPerDay). yearlySavings = gap × drinksPerDay × 365. Limits: Maintenance, milk waste, time and café tips omitted; invalid if gap ≤ 0.

Quality is not in the spreadsheet
A better shot at home can be ‘worth it’ on day one. This page only counts money. Taste is the other column.
Frequently asked questions
Include my time?
Not in this formula. If an hour of your morning is worth café convenience, put a labour rate into home cost or skip the purchase.
Milk drinks?
Raise homeCostPerDrink for milk and raise café price to the latte, not the espresso. Otherwise you compare a $4.50 flat white to a $0.60 lungo.
Descaling and baskets?
Add a few cents to home cost or a yearly maintenance line. The model is optimistic if you ignore parts.
