Green Coffee Density Calculator
Dense, high-grown greens take heat differently than puffy, lower-density lots. Bulk density is mass over the volume they occupy in a beaker — including air between beans. Use it to compare lots and to sanity-check a charge, not to brag about ‘84 kg/hL’ unless you used the same method.

Calculation method
Bulk density in g/ml is mass divided by millilitres occupied. Multiply by 1000 for g/L (and divide by 10 for a rough kg/hL if you must talk trade units). 100 g in 160 ml is 0.625 g/ml or 625 g/L. Tapping the beaker raises density; pick a protocol.

Quakers and defects
A handful of low-density defects will not move 100 g much. Density is a lot average. Sort with your eyes too.
Frequently asked questions
Water displacement?
Water fills gaps and approximates a higher ‘true’ density, and wets the sample. This page assumes a dry pour volume unless you measured displacement on purpose.
Why does density matter for roasting?
Denser beans often crack later or need more heat. It is a hint for charge temperature and RoR, not a profile by itself.
Screen size?
Larger screens pack differently. Compare density within a screen, or you are measuring packing, not origin.
