Grinder Burr Lifespan Calculator
Burrs wear. Manufacturers quote a kilogram life; you quote a daily dose. This splits remaining steel into days at your habit. Dull burrs make more fines, more channeling, and a grind size that ‘used to be espresso’ now pours like filter. Replace on taste and inspection, not only on this clock.

Recommended gear
Comandante C40 MK4
Steel burrs with a known replacement path. Track kilograms if you grind espresso every morning.
Typical range: $250–$320
1Zpresso K-Ultra
Hand-grinder burrs still wear. Daily 36 g adds up faster than ‘it is only a hand mill’ suggests.
Typical range: $80–$250
0.1 g coffee scale
Logging dose is how kgUsed stops being a guess. Tare, grind, note, dump.
Typical range: $20–$80
Calculation method
Remaining kilograms are rated life minus what you have already ground, floored at zero. Days remaining divide that remainder by daily dose in kilograms (grams / 1000). Percent used is kilograms used over rated life. 50 kg into a 500 kg set is 10% used; at 36 g/day you have on the order of 12 000 days left — the taste cliff often arrives earlier.
Exact formula
remainingKg = max(0, burrLifeKg − kgUsed). daysRemaining = remainingKg / (dailyDoseG / 1000). percentUsed = min(100, 100 × kgUsed / burrLifeKg). Limits: Bean hardness, roast level and unattended empty running omitted; rated life is marketing plus steel, not your espresso.

Seasoning is not lifespan
The first few kilograms knock sharp edges off. That is seasoning. Lifespan is the long, dull slide after that. Do not zero kgUsed after seasoning.
Frequently asked questions
Should I include wasted coffee?
Yes. Dial-in pucks still abrade burrs. Café life ratings assume throughput, not cups sold.
Titanium vs steel?
Coatings can last longer; the table on the box is still the input. When the coating is gone you have steel underneath, not magic.
Alignment versus wear?
A misaligned new burr set can taste ‘worn’. Check alignment and seasoning before you order replacements at 5% life.
